Beaches of the Virginia Eastern Shore

Assateague Island National Seashore - Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

Assateague Island National Seashore features 37 miles of beautiful Atlantic coastline across Virginia and Maryland. This island is open year-round and is a popular destination for swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, hiking, fishing, and more. In addition to the spledid scenery at Assateague Island's beaches, you can often see wild Chincoteague Ponies trotting across the sand or eating grass around the island. Talk about great beach photo opportunities!

The Viriginia district of the Assateague Island National Seashore is called the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, and it's managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service rather than the National Parks Service. It's here where you'll find the closest (and best) beach access for your vacation stay across Assateague Island. Entrance fees to visit the refuge start at $10 for a daily pass, but there are other pass options available depending your needs.

Cape Charles Beach

Cape Charles Beach is a beautiful public Eastern Shore beach located in the town of Cape Charles. The beach itself is known for its soft, white sand, calm waters, and stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay. Since the waters at Cape Charles Beach are  shallow and wave-free, it's an especially nice beach for families with children to visit.

In addition to swimming and sunbathing at Cape Charles Beach, you can enjoy fishing, beachcombing, boating, and several other fun water activities.
